More than a thousand asbestos victims had won an asbestos lawsuit with a $43 million dollar in settlement. The sad part of the story is that state officials knew about the incident but never intervened. More or less 400 people were killed and 1,750 got sick by asbestos that was caused by W.R. Grace and Company in a town in Canada named Libby.
A judge from Helena, Jeffrey Sherlock of District Court, approved the settlement and ends the lawsuit. The settlement created multiple lawsuits against Montana agencies for not protecting the residence of Libby.
The state position in their defense in the issue is that they had no legal obligation to warn people on the dangers of mining.
The claimants are mostly at the age of 65 and above. Court filed documents shows that there are more than 1,173 victims received payments from $500 to $50,000 to individuals who suffered from asbestos cancer.
